night four - kill log.
Who: Killers and Souza Samonji
When: The fourth night
Where: The jungles of Ship-Trap Island
[ It's the dead of night in the jungle. Considering the Hunt, you have to wonder if you're actually safe out here, but it at least seems quiet. Maybe you could try getting some rest, or maybe you should keep watch. Either way, that quiet may not seem very comforting. ]

He'll keep watch as much as he can though it's not so much keeping watch as it is just staying awake. ]

so she decided she would do it.
she decided she would go after Souza. she suspected the sword crew not only because they were a bit off-kilter, but she suspected something was up with Souza especially because of how staunchly the others jumped to protect him. his initial resignation to his fate on the second day was also strange to Max. killing someone before they kill you was more of Chloe, her best friend's, suit, but she was getting desperate. she was getting scared, and worried, as their numbers continued to dwindle, and to get rid of a member of the largest and potentially most dangerous group on the island — well, maybe this was just how she rationalized it.
Max comes from behind a bush, trying to be as quiet as she can — she'd taken off her shoes and put them in her bag. still, she isn't the stealthiest of girls. she definitely steps on a twig or two. when she catches sight of pink hair — finally — her throat closes up and her breathing almost stops.
she had to go through with it now. ]

I'm just going to assume you're not the General or any of the Foxhounds. [ There's a smile that never quite looks happy, Souza always has looked so...sad, it's just his way. ] Don't worry, I won't hurt you though I suspect you want to hurt me.
[ He pauses for good measure and takes his sword, setting the sheathe and blade inside, carefully on the ground before kicking it a little off to his side so it's out of reach in case she might think he'll try and be stealthy about this. Souza is straight forward, he's not a liar, and perhaps what everyone on this cursed island knows about him since day one, he's not afraid of dying. ]
I'm sorry, I never got your name but...mine is Souza Samonji. [ Another sigh but he keeps his eyes carefully on her, or at least in the direction he knows she's coming from. ] I won't pretend to try to understand humans, I think...I gave that up a long time ago. But one thing I remember about humans that I can never forget is that they're always scared.
[ He's hardly nice but he figures hey, if these are to be his last moments, he doesn't want them to be angry or indifferent, or sad. Even though it is a little of the latter...but he still thinks that if his vessel can go home, then he can too. ]
[ A bittersweet hope. ] Don't be scared. Don't let this place scare you, young lady. That's how the General wins, isn't it? Before you kill me though, there's something you should know. It's not much information but it may help if you choose to believe me that is.

[ she at least wanted to make this respectful. maybe the fact that he was a sword and not really a human made this the easiest target for Max. but the esteem in which Souza presented himself was actually making this harder. maybe it would be hard no matter what. ] I won't say I'm sorry. I can't. But I won't just not do anything. This is the only way I can — I maybe can help. It might just make everything worse, but I'm scared and want to go home and this just seems right, even though it totally isn't.
[ she steadies both her hand as best as she can and raises the pistol to eye level. her hands are shaking, but they're sure, just untrained. she's crying a bit. ]
W — What is it?

[ He waits a beat before continuing. ] But I don't understand why...you humans think that's so wrong. If you knew your friend was about to die, wouldn't you fight to protect them too? [ He'd argue that that's what she was kind of trying to do now in her own way. ] Is there something about that that's so...wrong? I assume you think I'm a part of what's happening here on the island despite the fact that everyone thinks on some level that me and my friends are loyal to each other, a tight knit group and yet...Horikawa died. He died in the same way Ema and Stocking did and no one seems to think we would not kill our own friend. [ It doesn't make sense to him, really. ]
What Royce did was no different than Sephiroth, who after one day said I was guilty due to...my personality. [ Or rather his passive nature though after that first day he had at least tried to be more active in trials to decipher clues but he's at least fairly sure no one noticed, or cared enough to realize it. ] My friends know me better than anyone else of course, and if I had done anything I would have admitted it.
[ He's so talkative for someone who's probably about to die but he figures, what does he have to lose at this point? ] Aside from all of that and perhaps what might be hardest to believe, is that I have been in contact with a Fox. After that first day they checked me and deemed me fit to keep in contact with me. I can only tell you they've checked Ivan and Matt too, after he brought up his own Fox, and found both to be innocent. [ He's thoughtful before proceeding. ] I found a Rainsford for them so at the very least this Fox will be protected until they can find the General or one of their Foxhounds.
You can choose to believe that or not, but at least think about it.

Out of everything I want to say before I die, it's...a question I want to know the answer to. I don't think I'll ever understand humans so this might be fruitless but...Miss Max, what...did we, did I do that was so wrong? Yamato, Horikawa, and now me...why is it we deserve death so much more than anyone else? I don't...understand why protecting your friends, having friends, can condemn us to death. [ Are humans so cold, he wonders? Souza forgets to breathe for a second, realizing he has to and sighs shakily and curious enough all these frustrations of his manifest just barely into tears. Not because he's scared but because he can't understand any of it, any of this. Though he's quick to wipe them away with a hushed apology. ]
Do what you must then, Max but I... [ He hesitates. ] Thank you for... ...at least...listening to me. It's probably the... [ This is immeasurably hard for him. ] Kindest thing anyone outside of my friends had done for me on this island.

I wish I could be that sure. I wish — I could be as level headed as you guys. I think that's what's so scary about you. You sword people are so decisive and sure all the time, but humans.. we're so fucking fickle. [ a beat. ] I did kill someone for my friend. Sort of. I let him die, but I could have prevented it from happening. Even if I couldn't stop it, I could have.. I can reverse time. I could have gone back and stopped it, but I was so afraid he was going to hurt my friend that I let her shoot him. I just let that happen and now I can't change it. I've screwed up enough, so I have to get back home and save her, or she'll be dead for real this time. [ she wipes her right eye with her upper arm's sleeve. she understands the unwavering fealty to her friends that Souza has. ] I think I should just stop trying to help. If you're being honest with me.. I'll vouch for your friends, okay?

she won't say sorry.
she can't say sorry.
she remembers what Matt told her. they were being forced to play this sick game. but how can she pretend this wasn't her fault? ]

[ Of course he is bleeding and while bleeding to death is slow, he finds it peaceful in a way. He always thought that in death he could find freedom, he could be released from his gilded cage and at least now, he is. Souza makes a conscious effort to keep his eyes open for as long as he's able, staring up at the sky that he's always longed for though he momentarily stops to pick up his strewn aside sword, holding it to his chest before he ever so slowly sits down to wait for the inevitable. ]
This might be too much to ask, Max but after I die, can you make sure I'm facing the sky? It... [ He coughs, the sensation hurts. ] I want it to be the last thing I see. It's so high up, isn't it? Ah...I never knew that.

[ she feels like she's intruding now, watching him slowly pass.. it was painful for her. she was disgusted with herself, to know that she was the one who did this to him, and still he remains as steady as he had been a few minutes ago.
she stays at the edge of the small clearing, clinging to a tree, looking away. she'll let these final moments be his and only his. ]
