FOXES Instead of waking up in the jungle, you wake up elsewhere. This is the square where the Foxes comes to decide what to do, and Ivan patiently sits on a bench. It's your job to pick someone to investigate. After all, you're saving them. You have a little while to think about who you'll pick tonight, but don't think too hard, since you only have until dawn. "So? Who do you want to know about?" Ivan asks, so clearly, she's not going to let you think on it that long. rulebook character statuses profiles All night votes will be due 5PM EST two days after trial.

[foxhounds]

[ Well "patiently." By the time everyone wakes up, it seems like Ivan is only just barely composing herself. She has a stained handkerchief in hand, and it's clear she's been crying for quite a while. ]

[baaaaka]

[ For all that's happened, he doesn't look quite as shaken; his face is drawn into a neutral expression, and he appears to be thinking deeply. Auger's seen plenty of death in his life by now. Blood is far from rare or horrifying to him; in fact, it's almost the opposite. On both counts.

Auger would like to laugh. But he's hidden his amusement very well. ]

Ah... Evening, Ivan. You don't look so good. [ his voice is dry. quietly, Auger wonders if those tears are real, but he doesn't comment on them. Instead, perhaps surprisingly, he goes straight to business. ] We both get to pick one person, right?

[As someone else who has not only seen plenty of death in his life, but been a part of it himself, Jason doesn't appear so much upset as he is just angry. The frustration is just below the surface, boiling, churning. His stance is tense, shoulders, hands fisted.

The blue of his eyes are ice cold, and they flicker to the handkerchief, then back up to Ivan, then to Auger, then to Ivan again. Strangely, though he wonders, too, if the tears are real, he has an inkling Ivan is as much of a piece in this game as they are. Maybe.]

I think we decide together on a single person.

[foxhounds]

[ She nods, at least regaining her composure, though her expression is still drawn. ]

...Yes. That's correct. Each night, you'll meet here and choose a person. I'll tell you where they lie.

[baaaaka]

[ an inkling isn't enough to convince him. It's a little disappointing that they can't take on two at once - but, then again, he doesn't know if he has two people.

Right now, there's only one. ]

Okay. In that case, how about you? [ his voice remains easy, and his eyes drift over to Red. ] After all, she's the most suspicious person here.

[Well, it doesn't seem to be against the rules...

Jason glances at Auger again, briefly, then looks once more to Ivan. He's quiet for a moment, considering. There's one or two other people he can think of he'd like to know more about, but... Yeah, Ivan initially is going to be the most suspicious.] It will probably be a waste, but fine, whatever.

[To Ivan:] What about you?

[foxhounds]

[ She nods, though she looks reluctant. ]

You can... But I do not recommend it.

[baaaaka]

Because it's "probably a waste," right?

[ he's not surprised Ivan's telling them not to do it. She's been telling them this game involves the people that arrived on the island exclusively. Doing something like this is skirting the rules, most likely, but isn't that how he always does things? ]

It's not like I suspect you, Ivan. But if we don't make sure, then who knows what the others will think, huh? I mean, you are the one that oversaw all that bloodshed back there.

[unrecked]

[Jason shrugs.] I don't have any beef with you either, but you'll have to be the start. Picking one person out of this many people is as much of a waste as picking you, honestly. The probability that we'll choose someone who is the General, who is a Rainsford, a murderer, is very low.

So go ahead. Spill.

[foxhounds]

[ She stumbles over her words, but ends up looking down at her lap. ]

I... If that's what you want.

[ She takes a moment to compose herself, then looks up at them. ]

Then your choice for the night is Ivan, the Overseer?

[baaaaka]

Mmhm.

[ a lazy curl of his tail. ]

Sorry to put you on the spot, Ivan, but it's for the best, I promise.

[Jason narrows his eyes a little, tense... then he relaxes. letitgo.mp3]

That's our choice.

[ She reaches into a pocket of her dress, since this dress is actually useful, and pulls out a little Moleskine notebook and a penknife. The book is opened on her lap, and she cuts a little incision into her pinky. She winces a little as she cuts herself, but speaks clearly to the book. ]

Who is Ivan?

[ She holds her pinky out over the book, and the red is seemingly absorbed into the pages, leaving no trace of where it stained behind. After a moment, red letters surface on the page. ]

IVAN: OVERSEER. INNOCENT.

[baaaaka]

[ he watches her actions with curiosity. It's almost like witchcraft, the blood and the book, though Auger doesn't believe in such things, of course. For now, he'll put that aside. The answer should be his focus.

And an answer he gets. A surprising one, at that. His golden eyes widen in surprise, and, after a few moments, his gaze drifts from the book to Ivan. ]

Is that the truth? [ a small smile quirks his lips. ] Well, I feel better already.

[unrecked]

[The ritual gets about the same attentiveness from Jason as it does Auger. Interesting. He's not unaccustom to witchcraft-like things, not after being dipped in something like the Lazarus Pit... but seeing this particular scenario is different.

The outcome? Jason is relieved. He closes his eyes, one, two, then opens them. Okay. Having his assumptions validated is pretty good, despite the set-back being they lack a General and someone will surely die.]

It's a start, I guess.

[foxhounds]

[ She looks down at the book, then up at them with a careful expression, as if she's considering how to phrase her words. ]

...You should both know, by the way. Now that you're certain of it. I— I cannot say what will happen. But if I am chosen, then the Hunt will come to an end too soon. Everyone here will be at a far graver risk. I must oversee the Hunt to its completion.

[baaaaka]

[ it seems this game does extend to her, after all, if they'd be allowed to vote for her. Interesting. The fact that the decision they just made confirms that another death will happen means next to nothing to him.

She seems scared. If she's innocent, maybe it's not all a farce. ]

Don't worry. Me and Red will protect you. Right? [ a nod to Jason. ] But it's strange. You said you live here with the General, right? He'd really just let you get killed like that? For fun?

[unrecked]

[Jason opens his mouth to protest, but then shuts it. Now listen here, Garfield, he did not at all vouch to protect Ivan!!! DON'T PUT WORDS INTO HIS MOUTH.

Dammit.] Wait--wait. How are we supposed to protect her? Are you going to stick your neck out when people ask how you know she's legit? I'm sure as hell not. Do you know how risky that is?

[His eyes snap over to Ivan.] How do we know you're not just expendable? Someone could easily take your place and continue the Hunt.

[foxhounds]

[ She bites her lip uncertainly. Clearly, there's some reason she can't be straightforward. ]

Yes... Someone could. But that is not what anyone here would want.

[ She seems to think of something, then looks into Jason's eyes as if pleading with him to understand what she's trying to convey. ]

Remember, I washed up here too. That's all I can say.

[baaaaka]

It's risky if you do it in a stupid way. I'm not stupid, though. Use your imagination a little.

[ a little careful planning and a few well-placed signs and words tend to be all one needs to conserve a life - or snatch it away. Of course, it's easier when you have the power of a kingdom behind you, but Auger has confidence he can manage it on his own just as well. ]

But wait, Ivan. You told me you lived here, and now you're saying you washed up here. Are you lying?

[unrecked]

[Someone else could. Jason will remember that.] Supposedly she washed up here, but she lives here now because she chose to stay. [His eyes don't leave Ivan, returns her stare.]

But she won't say why a woman chooses to continue lingering on a half-deserted island instead of going back home. [Pointedly. He finally looks away, running his hand back through his hair.] You think owe the General something? Your life?

People said this is the first time you're Overseer, so obviously you weren't bound to stay because of that. Right?

[foxhounds]

[ She shakes her head ]

I'm not lying. I did choose to stay because I wanted to continue existing, but... I cannot leave. The only way I can continue is to stay here and do my part. There is nothing for me to return to.

[baaaaka]

[ "continue existing." Interesting way of phrasing things. Auger assumes it means about the same thing as surviving - especially when she says there's nothing for her to return to. If you want someone to obey you, it's a fine tactic: trapping them somewhere and destroying anything that could lure them back. It's one he's used before, too. ]

... No family? Friends? [ he puts on a rather concerned face, ears shifting back in dismay. ] ... Did he do that, too?

[unrecked]

[A glance is given to Auger, then to Ivan. Jason waits expectantly on the answer, assuming perhaps it's true, but also that she will give as little of an explanation to the cat-man as she did him on the balcony. It's not the first time he has considered Ivan being held against her will.

It's not the first time he has considered the General being held against theirs either.]

[foxhounds]

[ She shakes her head ]

The General isn't responsible for why I'm here. I don't know who is. The only answer I've ever been able to find is fate...

[ Which she knows is hardly an answer at all, but that's seemingly frustrating to her too. She makes a difficult noise, then looks away. ]

I don't remember my family or my friends, or my real name, for that matter... Ivan is what any in the role of Overseer is called.
